Non-linear Workshop with Antonio Gagliano
4.9.14

Bon-roulotte

Bon with his roulotte in front of the Barcelona International Exposition that took place on Montjuïc mountain in 1929. He also seems to be saying goodbye to Espai 14-15.

Next week we will finish the activities of
Espai 14-15
with a workshop by
Antonio Gagliano
, an artist who is closing the

Preventive Archeology

cycle at
Espai 13
of the
Fundació Joan Miró
.

Buno
, Antonio Gagliano’s work contemplates a seemingly heterogeneous series of elements, two of which stand out: the mountain of Montjuïc and the production of images that represent history. The mountain appears in Antonio Gagliano’s story as a geological stratification that accumulates significant layers of narrative sediments, and at the same time as “a center of accumulation of intelligence, a type of monumental laboratory of signs that absorbs documents and regurgitates stories.”

Can we look at the territory, any territory, in this way? Can we understand the neighborhood of Bellvitge, for example, as a place where collective intelligence is sedimented, a laboratory where a certain type of documents are also produced that are processed and returned to the landscape in the form of stories that, at the same time and retroactively, shape it?

At the same time, Antonio Gagliano offers us with his work an image of history itself, of the historical narrative itself, which is presented as a rhizomatic, non-linear narrative, where the narrations are densified in the form of certain objects – taking into account that images and documents are also objects.

In collaboration with different groups and people from the Bellvitge neighborhood, we propose an open workshop-laboratory with the title of Non-linear Workshop, activated by Antonio Gagliano, who will share some of the tools he usually uses in his work, and during which we will examine the available documentation on the neighborhood and trace its origin and route to write and draw other possible stories and connections beyond its own history. Likewise, during the workshop, issues related to access to data and information and the right to copy will be addressed.

Like other initiatives promoted within the framework of the Espai 14-15 project, this workshop-laboratory wants to test other ways of putting into circulation the discourses, skills and ways of doing things of the different artists in relation to a specific territory; and may have a continuation beyond the project itself in the collaboration of LaFundició with the Bellvitge50 group, in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary and in other collective creation processes promoted by LaFundició as well as by, for example,

Bellvitge live role-playing

.

Part of these ‘other ways’ of putting art in relation to the territory involves occupying the public space and transiting it. For this reason, the workshop-laboratory will be mobile and will be framed in the Bellvitge Festival, a moment in which, paradoxically, the spontaneous occupation of the street occurs in a controlled manner. Like the cartoonist
Bon
, we will install ourselves with our mobile unit in different places in the neighborhood to develop the workshop; it is no coincidence that the figure of Bon and his roulotte also appear among the large number of stories that accumulate in Antonio Gagliano’s exhibition.

The Non-linear Workshop will offer the opportunity to share, review and rethink graphic materials about Bellvitge produced in different processes and moments by local groups: the
Institut Bellvitge
, the
Associació de Veïns i Veïnes de Bellvitge
, the
Centre el Esclat
, the
Centre d’Estudis de L’Hospitalet
… With the will to build a plural and non-linear collective representation of the territory.
