Neighbors from the Old Shantytowns of l’Hospitalet

In Barcelona and its metropolitan area, the eradication of informal settlements throughout the 20th century, especially from the 70s and 80s, led to the dispersal of their inhabitants into different neighborhoods on the urban periphery. Few shantytowns managed to get the authorities to force the construction of their new homes on the same sites where their shacks were located.

In the southern area of the Gran Via, in the municipality of l’Hospitalet, many of the inhabitants of neighborhoods such as Can Pi or La Bomba were relocated to the neighboring housing estates of Bellvitge and Gornal, built in the 60s and 70s. This circumstance has made it easier to contact many of those neighbors who, in addition, have kept the memory of their experience alive by meeting daily in the neighborhood and sharing memories and experiences.
