‘Lacho Baji’, a Route Sung by La Cadena
8.1.19

We are starting the year’s activities by re-editing an action that, in collaboration with the Lacho Baji Cali association, we carried out in 2014, within the framework of the flamenco night of the MACBA curated by Pedro G. Romero.

The action, entitled
Lachó bají (Good luck)
consisted of a walk through the territory inhabited by the Roma community of the El Gornal neighborhood (L’Hospitalet) from the early 60s to the early 90s, living first in self-built shacks and later in prefabricated houses. A territory through which the Distrito económico-Gran Via of L’Hospitalet currently extends.

During the walk, which we will reconstruct next Friday, January 11 from 6:00 PM, within the framework of the program of activities linked to the exhibition
CICdB: Can Pi, La Bomba, La Cadena i La Sangonera
, at the
Museu d’Història de L’Hospitalet
, we will visit the minimal remains, the almost invisible traces of that memory: the farmhouse converted into the offices of the Consortium for the reform of the Gran Via in L’Hospitalet; an empty lot that was once a passage to the sites where the city’s waste was selected and back to the barracks, of which now only a few tiles remain hidden by uncontrolled weeds, next to a four-star hotel; fenced vacant lots, owned by large investment groups that did not manage to build in time, before the real estate bubble burst; and the place where the Escuela Puente was located, which was attended by several generations of inhabitants of the barracks —the Lachó Bají school— which was located at what is now the main entrance to the fairgrounds.

On our walk we will be accompanied by the group
Ley de vida para gozar
formed by Jose Luís Fernández Gómez, El Piki, and El Kubala, who will perform songs and chants in the places linked to that past that evoke that time.

During the route we will connect the past, present and future of this territory that, on the other hand, reflects transformations subject to economic logics that are common to many other places.

We will start the walk at 6:00 PM in front of the headquarters of the Lachó Bají Calí association (Av. Vilanova, 22, L’Hospitalet, FGC Gornal ) and will end around 8:00 PM in Plaça d’Europa (FGC Europa | Fira).
