Youth, Divine Treasure
8.12.08

Next Thursday the 11th at 12 in the morning we will be in the
Sala d’Art Jove
of the Generalitat participating in the training days Km 0. Art Jove: practices and representations . The conference, which will take place on December 10, 11 and 12, aims to create a space for debate “around the cultural manifestations that develop in correspondence with youth, as well as the artistic practices that cultural spaces identify with the label of “emerging”“.

These are the first training days organized by the Sala d’Art Jove, which is why the coordinating team, formed by Oriol Fontdevila, Txuma Sánchez and Víctor Lobo, wanted to “a open new perspectives for debate and give rise to the presentation of new practical approaches that involve the work of artists, educators, managers, researchers, agents of the cultural industries, as well as technicians and politicians of the public administration.” It is for this reason that the edition of the conference has not been entrusted to a single coordinator but is developed in three independent blocks that have been conceived with the collaboration of different specialists: Andrés Hispano, audiovisual director and independent curator; Javier Rodrigo, educator and researcher; and Jaron Rowan, cultural researcher and member of
YProductions
.

The block coordinated by Andrés Hispano, in which Carles Guerra,
Mery Cuesta
and Lluís Cerveró will participate, is presented with the desire to critically review the myth of the young creative and of youth in the social imaginary. Jaron Rowan has invited José de la Rosa, coordinator of
Proyecto Lunar
in Seville, Tere Badia and Manuela Villa, content coordinator of
Matadero Madrid
to reflect on the relationships between “entrepreneurship” and emerging creation, examining the progressive adoption of business models in the field of culture.

For his part, Javier Rodrigo proposes to examine the potential of art as a pedagogical tool in relation to social policies aimed at young people, while raising the debate on the limits and the relationship between these policies and culture. It is in this conference where our intervention is framed, together with those of the
Kasal de Joves de Roquetes
and
Montserrat Cortadellas
, a selection of initiatives that address the proposed topic from well-differentiated practices and possibly divergent theoretical positions. We will see what conclusions can be drawn from this assembly.

The truth is that we are not very comfortable dealing with this notion of ‘youth’ and we are tempted to declare with Carles Guerra that we really do not know what it is. Although a good part of our projects have had the participation of young people, this has been due more to our interest in school culture than to a supposed youth culture, a concept that usually leads to quite corny stereotypes that ignore other social and cultural conditions that have nothing to do with being young. It is also true that our work with action groups formed mostly by young people has prompted us to examine the way in which the official culture of the school relates to other cultural formations and social habits relevant to them.

Registration for the conference is free although limited due to the capacity of the room. You will find all the necessary information on the Sala d’Art Jove website.
