The Keras Buti Popular School (“we do things” in Romani) is a space to share and collectively build knowledge: knowledge and “doings” linked to a specific territory and communities; knowledge and “doings” that articulate a cosmology, a way of feeling and being in the world.
At the same time, the Keras Buti Popular School explores the ways in which knowledge and culture can be articulated with forms of economy that put the sustenance of life at the center.
Vegetable fibers is a line of research and creation within the Keras Buti Popular School project with which we want to initiate processes to restore and collectively develop a knowledge of the environment in relation to vegetable fibers, and the knowledge and practices that are linked to it.
Following the approval of a motion in the plenary session of the L’Hospitalet City Council that, on the one hand, allows the collection of palmetto, wicker and other wild fibers and fruits, and on the other, promotes opening specific programs within schools that put the city’s plant ecosystems and their work on the table, in the 2018-2019 academic year, work processes have been initiated in two schools: the Gornal School Institute (in the Gornal neighborhood) and the Pau Vila School (in the Florida neighborhood) with the fifth and fourth grade groups respectively.

During the process, we shared knowledge about basketry and the local plants that we can use in its elaboration, while we tried to find those knowledges that exist in the neighborhood with which the link of transmission has been broken by the “obsolescence” of ways of doing things linked to life in the countryside. Thinking about the possibilities to activate these skills today has been part of the challenges to think about.
