Expanded University Meeting at the UNIA
14.9.09

We’re back announcing a move just as it has already begun, but oh well, we’ll console ourselves with “better late than never.” This morning marked the beginning of the

Expanded University Meeting

of the
Space-Network of Digital Practices and Cultures
of the
International University of Andalusia
(UNIA) coordinated by
Juan Freire
and
Daniel Villar Onrubia
. The meeting aims to explore, as its subtitle indicates, “digital practices and cultures in the teaching-learning processes in the context of higher education.” After exploring the concept of “expanded education” in the homonymous symposium organized by ZEMOS98 a few months ago, Juan Freire now applies it to higher education. Perhaps it is our problem, of reading, but it seems to us that in the presentation texts of the meeting, ‘expanded education’ ends up being confused, even unintentionally, with ‘e-education’; in any case, it still seems to us that Juan Freire’s approach to education leaves aside or often overlooks the social and economic processes and the struggles that are established in the field of education and that ultimately shape it; hence, the well-intentioned proposal in digital key seems completely insufficient when talking about what education is and should be.
