The CICdB is Going to the Flea Market!
18.4.24

Last Friday, we set up our stall at the Bellvitge flea market, where we displayed part of the archive, as well as the newsletters published by the CICdB.

The sitiales were courtyards where mainly women and children selected and separated the waste transported by cart by the escombriaires from Barcelona. All this happened long before garbage collection was granted to large companies.

Precisely on Friday, Fina, a resident of Santa Eulàlia who had worked in one of these sitiales, came to our stall. Stories like Fina’s tell us a part of the city’s history that exemplifies a type of relationship between the center and the peripheries: what is considered residual is expelled to the “outside.” In this way, the sitiales functioned as a drain in which waste was transformed to reintroduce it into the urban metabolism.

The next dates we will set up the stall at the Bellvitge flea market are: May 3, June 7, and July 5. You will find us next to the old Aula de Cultura from 10 AM to 1 PM.
