I read on Cory Arcangel’s blog that he will soon be exhibiting a couple of his pieces in Spain: I Shot Andy Warhol and Super Mario Movie (with Paper Rad). To my surprise, when I click on the link, I find that the exhibition can be seen in a new exhibition space, but also for research, training and production, dedicated to the intersections between art, science and industry that will open this coming Friday, March 30: Laboral. Art and Industrial Creation Center , in Gijón. Organically, the center depends on a non-profit cultural foundation made up of companies and institutions and has the support of the Government of the Principality of Asturias. The inaugural program is certainly interesting and among the exhibitions and projects that form it is Gameworld, precisely the exhibition in which Cory Arcangel participates and that has brought us here.
Gameworld is curated by Carl Goodman and starts from a theoretical position that is very close to the one we put into practice in JustPlayIt. I copy and paste directly from the Laboral website so you can see:
Gameworld’s conceptual approach is embodied in two parts: one focused on internal considerations (game history and design) and others external (how games shape culture), related through a third intermediate section dedicated to alternative games and current research on games.
Very good approach, isn’t it?
On the other hand, the expo has several centers of interest that are very clearly stated:
Perhaps it is worth escaping for a few days to Gijón, not only to see the exhibition, but to see firsthand what Laboral looks like; and it seems to offer some interesting differentiating features.
