Bologna Process
17.5.07

Today, the Conference of Ministers of Education is being held in London to advance the reform process in the European Higher Education Area. The event is part of the European Commission’s strategy to promote collaboration between higher education institutions and increase the mobility of students and researchers across the countries that have signed the Bologna agreement.

The truth is that the Bologna agreement has been devised and it seems that it will be gradually implemented without too much criticism or resistance from the university community; however, the agreement implies an ideology that is by no means neutral, as one might imagine. There is much to be said on the subject and we will surely do so later. Next June, an interesting text by Beatriz Ferrus Anton will be published, which she already presented at the seminar organized by the MACBA: ‘René Schérer: com volem ser educats?’ (which we mentioned recently) and in which she unmasks part of the ideological conceptions that support the agreement and that the text (the agreement) includes, sometimes camouflaging them under the appearance of a pseudo-libertarian pedagogy, and in others explicitly, as when it defines the agreement as a tool to place Europe at the head of the global knowledge economy. We will be watching closely.
