Legal Self-Defense against Racism with Pastora Filigrana
9.10.25

Legal action has a dual purpose: on the one hand, to redress the violation of rights, and on the other, to reduce impunity and the invisibility of racism and xenophobia in the social space.

This activity is part of the Racial Justice and Empowerment 2025 project, which seeks to address the phenomenon of underreporting of racial discrimination. The project is promoted by La Fragua Projects, a Roma and racialized entity of the social and solidarity economy.

The training is aimed at entities of migrants, refugees, Roma, or other racialized people who work directly with people affected by racism and xenophobia and who, therefore, regularly receive information on cases of violation of the right to equal treatment and non-discrimination on racist or xenophobic grounds.

The Racial Justice and Empowerment 2025 project also wants to open a debate on the necessary anti-racist approach to analyze the phenomenon of underreporting. So far, public institutions recognize a very high underreporting of existing situations of racism and xenophobia, but they do so by placing the responsibility on the victims, an aspect that we consider detrimental to designing actions and measures that have a broader scope and that increase the efficiency and effectiveness obtained so far. This is a debate that connects with the work we do weekly at the Escoleta Jurídica, where many of the shared conflicts are crossed by racism and xenophobia.
