Reversible Actions
2.11.08

The seminar will take place next Friday and Saturday, 7 and 8 of November, at the Centre d’Arts Contemporàies de Vic (in process) Reversible Actions. On art, education and territory . The seminar proposes: […] based on the relationship established between education, art and territory as a space for social interaction. It constitutes a reflection on contemporary artistic production that develops educational activities, which are related to specificities of the territory and that require a network connection to carry them out and communicate them.

As also stated in the seminar’s presentation text: Often, from an artistic perspective, pedagogy has been relegated to providing a complementary value to cultural production, with the danger of degrading or diminishing its quality and critical position. On the contrary: From the educational and social action side, the artist’s work is often considered not very open to collaboration in educational projects or community intervention in local contexts and institutions.

That ‘complementary value’ of pedagogy to the field of cultural production is usually understood in terms of ‘proximity’, that is, the task of the educational departments within cultural institutions is usually to ‘bring closer’ a knowledge that is distant from the public. We think, however, that, paradoxically, it is precisely this act of approximation that creates the distance: As Rancière said, it is the need for an explanation by the teacher that builds in the student the idea of their own ignorance.

Ramon Parramon and Javier Rodrigo, directors of the seminar, propose a reflection on new pedagogical practices that do not complement or supplement cultural production, but rather interrelate with it, determining themselves as a legitimate area of knowledge construction and cultural criticism; an approach that, without a doubt, is very close to us. In addition, the list of speakers turns out to be quite stimulating: Carmen Morsh y Rubia Salgado, Lilian Amaral, Ailbhe Murphy, Herman Labro y Rika Colpaert, Fernando Hernández, Loraine Leeson, Aulabierta, Santiago Barber and Jesús Carrillo, you have more info about the speakers and their interventions on the seminar’s website 😉
